Opened September 2018: The Foundry is a student focused design studio, inspiring transdisciplinary innovative collaboration between Babson, Olin, and Wellesley for the advancement of new or existing projects.

The top focus of the Foundry is to be a creative, innovative culture. One in which Babson, Olin and Wellesley College, Faculty and Students learn and be inspired by one another within a physically, emotionally and mentally safe environment.

The culture is designed to increase the capacity of Faculty and Students to develop any project using unfettered creativity and a range of prototyping equipment.

The Scout Program:

July - June 2018:
Scouts (student employees) are 10 students from each of the 3 BOW colleges. They comprise a wide range of backgrounds, disciplines, genders, and interests. And cultivate a safe, inclusive, creative and collaborative Foundry studio environment and culture.

The Scout Program:

Trained to have the skills and awareness to keep The Foundry community safe from a wide range of physical, mental and emotional harm. These trainings include; having operational awareness of all 35+ pieces of Foundry equipment, EMS, de-Escalation, bias identification and title IX reporting metrics

The Scout Program:

Support an inclusive, fun and creative community. Actively expands their ability to explore new ideas. Are a student leaders, mentors, Foundry ambassadors and liaise with the BOW colleges. They consult, supports and assists all members of the BOW community in the development of ideas and projects

Janos identified and oversaw dozens of major and minor safety upgrades to all five Foundry equipment shops.

Stone designed, completed the equipment list, outfitted and launched five operational makerspace studios

Logo Design:

September 2018:
Stone designed Foundry identity including the Foundry logo. The logo is the overlap of a Square, Circle and Triangle. Each shape representing one of the three BOW colleges. But we never say which one is which... that's up to you!

In addition, the logo spells the word "AND", to define that the Foundry is collaborative, experimental and looking toward the future.

Orientation Training:

September - November 2018:
Orientation is a 30 minute tour followed by a 30 minute prototyping exercise. During the 60 minutes faculty and students learn about the Foundry culture, purpose, safety, honor code and fabrication capacity.

Faculty and students are then are taught the fundamentals of cardboard prototyping by making a cardboard 1/2 cube

Foundry Fellowship:

December - January 2019:
The Fellowship is 10-week long fellowship and residency focused on collaborative creative exploration and innovative work. BOW students to apply as a team of between 2-6 people to develop or continue a passion project. We received 62 applicants the first year.

Bootcamp:

January - February 2019:
A two-day Scout retreat that focuses on equipping Scouts with skill-sets and awareness to keep The Foundry community safe from a wide range of of physical mental and emotional harm.

Stone continuously worked with faculty to integrate the Foundry culture and equipment into their classrooms.

Untitled Fashion Show

March- April 2019
Celebrated and showcased BOW community's deep creativity around wearables, apparel and fashion. This was major opportunity to use the Foundry equipment to makes an appeals piece, to share the experience with friends and to build the BOW community involvement in the Foundry. "Untitled" involved over 50 models 30 designers and had an attendance of 370 people

The Foundry Handbook

May - August 2019
Stone led the design of the Foundry Operations Handbook. A 70+ page living document which identifies all critical operational procedures and is used for reference and training The Foundry Scouts.

Foundry Employee Organizational Structure

September - November 2019
Stone led the development of systems to effectively manage 30 Scouts working on dozens of projects during 21 shifts per/week. He was able to increase the efficiency, success rate of projects. equipment trainings and BOW faculty / student support though this effort.

Stone led the implementation of a training infrastructure to enable the Scouts to train on Foundry Equipment

BOW Community Equipment Training Infrastructure:

This allowed Scouts to train the BOW community to safety and effectively operate over 60 pieces of analog and digital prototyping equipment.

Expand Capacity

September - November 2019
Stone over saw the identification of need to add new equipment, a dozen more equipment trainings and multiple 2D and 3D software trainings to the Foundry offerings

DIY projects for coding and electronics

September 2019:
Stone oversaw the development of bespoke DIY projects for coding and electronics allowing students and faculty to run project at their own spread and by taking the cards with them, helps spread the word about the Foundry

Foundry Scout-Led Workshops

September - October 2019:
Stone worked with Scouts to engage the BOW community some fun and quick hands-on projects to put into practice what they learned in trainings. This enables their new skills and to help build the creative culture in the Foundry.

Worked with Vice President of Innovation to run the Foundry’s first paid sprint for a corporate client. 20 Students work for a ½ day sprint to develop 60 high level solutions for the client.

Pleased with the results, Corporate client opts for semester long follow on which covers %10 of the Foundry operational budget.
